About Coalbed Methane (CBM)
Coalbed methane (CBM) is the natural gas found in all coal deposits. It frequently occurs as pure methane gas and is a clean burning fuel considered more environmentally friendly than oil, coal or even conventional natural gas.
CBM has been produced on a small scale in the United States for about twenty years, but technology for efficient exploitation has only been perfected within the past five years. During this short time span CBM has grown to about 8% of U.S. natural gas production.
CBM development in British Columbia remains in its infancy and the provincial government is encouraging development of the sector. Within the past five years, CBM has rapidly evolved as an important new energy source in the Western United States. However, potentially large resources in Canada, including extensive coal fields in British Columbia strategically situated to serve the increasing demands of heavily consuming markets in the western United States, remain undeveloped. Forum recognizes the enormous potential of this important new energy sector in British Columbia and the unique opportunity to establish a ground floor position in the industry and become a leader in its early development.
